• Canada's First Live White Tail Deer Export Shipment

    April 23, 2015:

Livestock Reproductive Technologies Inc. provided veterinary and technical assistance to Hartland Deer of Briercrest Saskatchewan in the shipment of a large consignement of live whitetail deer to Russia.

In a team effort with Mr. Al Morhart of Hartland Deer, Dr. Martin Wenkoff attended at the loading of the deer (747F8 cargo jet) at Calgary International Airport, monitored and attended to the deer during the ten hour flight to Moscow and accompanied the animals to the receiving farms in Russia.

The animals were enclosed in comfortable custom made crates which had very generous amounts of room, ample ventilation and a water supply. During the flight, lights were turned down and internal crate temperatures were monitored with thermocouples and were maintained at between 8 and 12 degrees C. All of the animals arrived at the Russian farms in excellent health and showed no signs of travel stress.

Now that we have shown that whitetail deer can be air transported safely, live deer exports could become more commonplace.
